Set up the FTB SkyFactory Challenges server

Install the FTB SkyFactory Challenges map 1.1.1 on a Minecraft 1.10.2 Forge server from the Modpacks tab, with RAM, first start and common fixes.

Updated 4 min read

FTB SkyFactory Challenges is a Feed The Beast map for Minecraft 1.10.2 on Forge, built around the core Sky Factory gameplay with speedrunners in mind. Its page asks you to complete 20 objectives as fast as you can, in teams of up to four players. The Modpacks tab can install it from Feed The Beast's own source.

Checked against FTB SkyFactory Challenges 1.1.1 on Forge 12.18.3.2254 and Minecraft 1.10.2, October 2026.

Which SkyFactory this is

Feed The Beast lists several Sky Factory packs, and a search for SkyFactory returns three rows: FTB SkyFactory Challenges, FTB Presents Skyfactory 3 and FTB Presents Skyfactory 2.5. This guide covers only Challenges. For SkyFactory 2.5, 4, 5 and One, read Set up a SkyFactory server.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.10.2, Forge 12.18.3.2254 and Java 8. These are the targets Feed The Beast lists for 1.1.1, its newest release. The panel picks Java 8 for any Minecraft version below 1.17.
  • 4 GB of RAM. The pack's page lists 4 GB as both the minimum and the recommended amount. Compare that with your plan using how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and the Minecraft plans.
  • The same version for players. They install FTB SkyFactory Challenges 1.1.1 from the FTB App, Feed The Beast's launcher.

Install from the Feed The Beast source

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. Press the Feed The Beast chip above the search box and search for Challenges, which returns only this pack. Searches need at least three letters. If there is no Feed The Beast button, that source is not available on your account yet, and the steps below do not apply until it is.
  3. Press Install on FTB SkyFactory Challenges.
  4. Leave Take a backup first ticked, which is the default. If all your backup slots are used, the panel says "Couldn't start a backup. Free a backup slot, or untick the backup and try again."
  5. If Keep my world, settings and player lists is shown, leave it unticked, since this is a fresh install. Ticked, it puts your existing world back over whatever the pack installs. If the window shows a note about your world in place of that tickbox, your world was saved by a newer Minecraft than this pack can open, so it is not kept, and your current world goes into the backup.
  6. Hold Install and reinstall until it fills. Tick Start the server when it's ready first if you want it to boot afterwards.

While it installs, the console prints Installing the FTB pack. This takes a few minutes. and ends with Pack installed.

First start

If you did not tick the start box, press Start on the Console tab and accept the EULA when the panel asks. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Installed from the Feed The Beast source, this pack reaches that line on its first start.

Feed The Beast's file list for 1.1.1 holds the pack's map under maps/ftbchallenges. The server does not load that map: it starts a new world named world. After the first start, World folder in Config Editor reads world, and maps/ftbchallenges stays in File Manager as installed.

Players join with the address in the left rail (Connect to your server for the first time). To let teammates use commands, make them operators from the Players tab: open Operators and press Make operator.

Common problems

  • A player cannot join. Check they run Minecraft 1.10.2 with FTB SkyFactory Challenges 1.1.1. Join a modded server from your launcher has the steps.
  • The install stops part way. The Modpacks tab shows "The last install didn't finish" with Show install log and Retry install.
  • The server runs out of memory. Watch the RAM Usage card on the Console tab, and see Why is my server lagging.
  • The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server and replaces its files. Keep Take a backup first ticked if the current world matters to you.
