Set up the FTB OceanBlock modpack server

Install FTB OceanBlock 1.16.3 on a Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge server from the Feed The Beast source, with the level-type note, RAM and fixes.

Updated 4 min read

FTB OceanBlock is a Feed The Beast questing pack for Minecraft 1.16.5 on Forge, set among infinite oceans with custom structures in the deep. Its page counts more than 550 quests. The Modpacks tab can install its server from Feed The Beast's own source.

Checked against FTB OceanBlock 1.16.3 on Forge 36.2.39 and Minecraft 1.16.5, October 2026.

OceanBlock or OceanBlock 2

Feed The Beast lists two packs with this name, and a search for OceanBlock returns both. FTB OceanBlock is the Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge pack this guide covers. FTB OceanBlock 2 is a separate pack on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge and Java 21, and its steps differ. Check the Minecraft version on the row before you press Install.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge 36.2.39 and Java 8. These are the targets Feed The Beast lists for 1.16.3, the newest release. The panel picks Java 8 for any Minecraft version below 1.17.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM, 6 GB recommended. The pack's page lists both figures. Compare them with your plan using how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and the Minecraft plans.
  • The same version for players. They install FTB OceanBlock 1.16.3 from the FTB App, Feed The Beast's launcher.

Install from the Feed The Beast source

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. Press the Feed The Beast chip above the search box and search for OceanBlock. Searches need at least three letters. If there is no Feed The Beast button, that source is not available on your account yet, and the steps below do not apply until it is.
  3. Press Install on the row for Minecraft 1.16.5 named FTB OceanBlock, not FTB OceanBlock 2.
  4. Leave Take a backup first ticked, which is the default.
  5. If Keep my world, settings and player lists is shown, leave it unticked for a fresh start. Ticked, it puts your current world and server.properties back over the pack's. If the window shows a note about your world in place of that tickbox, your world was saved by a newer Minecraft than this pack can open, so it is not kept, and your current world goes into the backup.
  6. Hold Install and reinstall until it fills. Tick Start the server when it's ready first if you want it to boot afterwards.

When the install finishes, the pack's server files are in place and a few client-only mods are turned off for you.

The level-type line

The pack's page says "For servers: level-type=default". After the install and first start, open server.properties in File Manager and check that the line reads level-type=default. It does on a fresh install, so there is nothing to change. Do not pick a value from the World type list in Config Editor for this pack. The list offers newer names such as Normal and Superflat, and those are not the value the pack asks for.

First start

If you did not tick the start box, press Start on the Console tab and accept the EULA when the panel asks. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. The pack starts on Java 8 with Forge 36.2.39. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding the address in Minecraft.

Common problems

Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server and replaces its files. Keep Take a backup first ticked if the current world matters to you.
