Set up the FTB Direwolf20 1.21 server
Install FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.21 on a Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge server from the Feed The Beast source in the Modpacks tab, then fix problems.
FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.21 is the Feed The Beast and Direwolf20 kitchen-sink pack for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. Its page lists Ender IO, Railcraft Reborn with Steve's Carts, Minecolonies and Applied Energistics 2 with several add-ons. The Modpacks tab lists it under its Feed The Beast source, and that source installs it.
Checked against FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.21, version 1.22.0, on NeoForge 21.1.248 and Minecraft 1.21.1, October 2026.
What the pack needs
- Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 21.1.248 and Java 21. These are the targets Feed The Beast lists for 1.22.0. The panel picks Java 21 for Minecraft 1.21.1, so you do not set it.
- 4 GB of RAM at least, 6 GB recommended. Those are the minimum and recommended amounts on the pack's page. Your plan sets the RAM, so read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install.
- Room for the files. The server's share of the 1.22.0 file list, leaving out the client-only files, adds up to roughly 640 MB, before the world grows, so check Disk Analyser if the disk is tight.
- The same version for your players. The pack has many releases, and everyone needs the one your server runs. Its page is on feed-the-beast.com.
Install from the Feed The Beast source
- Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
- Above the search box, press the Feed The Beast chip and search for
Direwolf20 1.21. Searches need at least three letters. If there is no Feed The Beast chip, that source is not available on your account yet, and the steps below do not apply until it is. - Press Install on FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.21. A search for just
Direwolf20lists the older editions too, such as 1.20, 1.19 and 1.18. They are separate packs on other Minecraft versions. - In the window that opens, leave the version dropdown on Newest that fits your server, which starts on 1.22.0. Pick an older release there only if your players are staying on it.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. An install replaces the server's files, so the backup is your way back.
- Tick Start the server when it's ready only if you have already started this server once and accepted the EULA. On a new server it does not start by itself, so leave it unticked and start it yourself afterwards. Then hold Install and reinstall until it fills. The panel makes the backup first, then installs the pack, and the install takes a few minutes.
Install an FTB modpack on your Minecraft server covers the same tab for other Feed The Beast packs.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab and accept the EULA when the panel asks. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. With 8 GB of RAM, this pack takes about three and a half minutes to reach that line on its first start. Your address is in the left rail with a copy button, and Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.
The install writes a minimal server.properties with just the server address and port, and the server fills in the rest the first time it starts. After that start, open the Config Editor and set Player slots for the group you expect. Its help text calls View distance (chunks) the biggest lever on RAM and CPU, and Simulation distance (chunks) is cheaper to cut than view distance, so lower those first if the server struggles.
Common problems
- A player cannot join. Check they run the same pack version, on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge. Join a modded server from your launcher shows the steps.
- The install stops part way. The tab shows "The last install didn't finish" with Show install log and Retry install.
- The install stops at "Taking a backup...". The alert reads "Couldn't start a backup. Free a backup slot, or untick the backup and try again." Each install's backup is protected, so a second install in a row can fill a plan with few backup slots: delete a backup you no longer need on the Backups tab, then install again. If a slot looks free, wait a minute and try again, because the panel can also be busy for a moment.
- The server lags or runs out of memory. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail. Why is my server lagging has more.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault. Pack bugs go to Feed The Beast's issue tracker.
Installing a pack reinstalls your server and replaces its files. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
