Set up Fabled on your Minecraft server
Install Fabled and CodexCore on a Paper server from Hangar, then export your classes and skills from the web editor and load them.
Fabled is an RPG plugin for Paper servers. It adds classes, skills and attributes, so players choose a class and use its skills. It was called ProSkillAPI before it was renamed. You design the classes and skills in its web editor, then copy the exported files onto your server.
Checked against Fabled 1.0.4-R0.90-SNAPSHOT and CodexCore 1.1.1-R1 on Hangar, which list Paper 1.16.5 to 1.21.11, October 2026.
What you need
- A Paper server on Minecraft 1.16.5 to 1.21.11. Hangar does not list newer Minecraft versions for Fabled, so use the JAR Manager to pick 1.21.11 or older. Fabled's wiki asks for Java 17 or later, and the panel picks Java from your Minecraft version, so stay on 1.17 or newer.
- CodexCore, a library plugin that Fabled lists as required. Without it Fabled will not load.
- Optionally Vault and PlaceholderAPI. Fabled's
plugin.ymllists both as soft dependencies, so it loads without them. Its wiki lists Vault with its requirements, for economy, chat and permission features, and marks only PlaceholderAPI optional, so install Vault if you want those features.
Hangar has a single Fabled version, in its Dev channel, which Hangar marks as unstable. The newest version on the Spigot page is 1.0.4-R0.73. Take a backup in the Backups tab before you start.
Install Fabled
- Open the Plugins tab and choose the Hangar chip in the source chip row at the top of the tab.
- Search for
CodexCoreand click Install. Hangar does not tell the panel what a plugin needs, so install CodexCore yourself first. - Search for
Fabledand click Install on the one published by VoidEdge. - Open the Console tab and click Restart, or Start if the server is stopped.
- Type
pluginsin the console. Both plugins should be green. Fabled creates aplugins/Fabledfolder with aconfig.ymlin it.
If you see no results for Fabled, the Game version filter is on a version Hangar does not list. Change the server version first.
Build your classes and skills
Classes and skills are built in Fabled's web editor at fabled.travja.dev, which needs no setup on your side. Create your classes, skills and attributes there and export them. In the game, /class customize opens a GUI editor for operators.
Copy the exported files to the server with the File Manager and Upload:
- A single skill goes in
plugins/Fabled/dynamic/skill, and a single class inplugins/Fabled/dynamic/class. - The Backup All bundle gives
skills.ymlandclasses.yml, which go inplugins/Fabled/dynamic, andattributes.yml, which goes inplugins/Fabled.
Run class reload in the console, or restart, to load them.
Commands and permissions
Everything starts with /class. Players use /class profess <class> to join a class, /class skill to see their skills and /class reset to start over. /class reload works for operators in game and from the Console tab. To put a player in a class yourself, run class forceprofess <player> <class> in the Console tab. It does not run from in game, even for an operator.
Common problems
- Fabled does not load. Paper's message is
Unknown/missing dependency plugins: [CodexCore]. Install CodexCore and restart. - A player cannot cast skills. They must run
/class profess <class>first, and only skills on that class work. - A skill is missing from
/class skill. Check it is assigned to the class in the editor, the player has professed that class and the skill's level requirement is met. - Exports do nothing. Check the folder names. They are
skillandclass, singular, and old files left behind can clash. - The file will not load. YAML breaks on tabs. See Find and fix YAML and JSON config errors.
Fix mod and plugin errors explains the other startup messages.
