Set up EpicRename on your Minecraft server

Install EpicRename from the Plugins tab, grant its permissions, and let players rename items and edit lore, with blacklists and optional costs.

Updated 3 min read

EpicRename lets players rename items, add lore lines and give items an enchantment glow with chat commands, with colour codes, optional costs and blacklists for you to control. It runs on Paper or Purpur.

Checked against EpicRename 3.12.2, which lists Paper 1.13 to 1.21.8 on its Hangar page, and the plugin's wiki, October 2026.

What you need

  • A Paper or Purpur server. Vanilla servers have no Plugins tab, so switch software in JAR Manager first (see Change your Minecraft version or mod loader).
  • A permissions plugin such as LuckPerms. EpicRename checks a permission for each command, so players cannot use it until you grant them. Operators normally have every permission by default.
  • Vault and an economy plugin, only if you want to charge for renames. The plugin's page marks Vault as optional. See Set up Vault on your Minecraft server.

Install it

EpicRename is on Hangar, which the Plugins tab can search.

  1. Open the Plugins tab and select the Hangar button.
  2. Search for EpicRename and click Install on the project by JustBru00.
  3. Restart from the Console tab (or click Start if the server is stopped), then type plugins. EpicRename should appear in the list.

The latest build lists Paper versions up to 1.21.8. The store only offers builds that list your server's Minecraft version, so on a newer version the search may come back empty. In that case, download the jar from the plugin's Hangar page and upload it into the plugins folder in the File Manager with Upload. Neither its Hangar page nor its wiki says whether that build runs on a version newer than 1.21.8, so back up before you try it and read the Console on the first start.

Give players access

The plugin's wiki lists these shortcut permissions:

  • epicrename.poweruser grants every command, with all materials and colour codes, except /import, /epicrename reload and /epicrename debug.
  • epicrename.administrator grants all commands with all materials and colour codes, which takes in those three.
  • epicrename.rename.* grants /rename for all materials and formats. Each other command has its own version, such as epicrename.lore.* and epicrename.glow.*.

Neither shortcut gives the bypass permissions. Use epicrename.bypass.* for that.

Commands

  • /rename <name> renames the item in hand.
  • /lore <line1|line2|line3> adds the lore, with the | character separating lines.
  • /setloreline <lineNumber> <text>, /addloreline <text>, /insertloreline <beforeLineNumber> <text> and /removeloreline <lineNumber> edit single lore lines.
  • /glow and /removeglow add or remove an enchantment glow.
  • /removename, /removelore, /hideenchantments and /unhideenchantments clear or hide parts of an item.
  • /editname and /editlore start editing the item's name or lore.
  • /epicrename reload reloads config.yml and messages.yml.

Limit what players can rename

Open config.yml in the plugin's folder inside plugins with the File Manager. Two sections do most of the work:

  • blacklists holds four lists: material, text, existingname and existingloreline. A player with epicrename.bypass.materialblacklist or epicrename.bypass.textblacklist skips the matching list.
  • rename_character_limit has enabled and limit keys. The limit is 30 characters, and it is off by default.

To charge for the commands, set use: true under economy and restart. The default costs are 100 each for rename, lore and glow. An xp section works the same way but charges experience points.

Common problems

  • "No permission" for every command. Nothing grants the permissions yet. Add epicrename.poweruser to the group in your permissions plugin.
  • Colour codes do nothing. Each code needs its own permission, such as epicrename.rename.format.a. Hex colours use epicrename.rename.format.hex. epicrename.poweruser already includes them.
  • A config change has no effect. Run /epicrename reload or restart the server. Find and fix YAML and JSON config errors shows how to check a config file you have edited.
