Set up CustomOreGen on your Minecraft server
Install CustomOreGen on Paper or Purpur, define weighted cobblestone generator tiers in config.yml, reload them and fix the common problems.
CustomOreGen changes what a cobblestone generator produces. Instead of cobblestone every time, you list blocks and the percentage chance of each, and you can make better tiers for players with a permission. It was written for SkyBlock servers, but it also runs without a SkyBlock plugin. This guide installs it on a Paper or Purpur server and sets up two tiers.
Checked against CustomOreGen 1.3.40-SNAPSHOT on Paper 1.21.10, October 2026. That is a snapshot build, the only file on its Modrinth page. Its Modrinth page lists Minecraft up to 1.21.10, and the file was last updated in October 2025.
Before you start
- You need a Paper or Purpur server, which show a Plugins tab.
- The Modrinth listing stops at Minecraft 1.21.10. On a newer version the store may say there is no build for it, and you would have to pick Any version in the store to install the file anyway.
- The project lists these SkyBlock plugins as supported: BentoBox (with its Level addon), IridiumSkyblock, ASkyBlock, AcidIsland, uSkyBlock, Island World, SuperiorSkyblock2, PlotSquared and FabledSkyBlock. They decide whose island a generator belongs to and what the island level is.
Install CustomOreGen
- Open the Backups tab and press Create backup.
- Select Plugins and type
CustomOreGenin the search box. Modrinth is the default source. - Press Install on the CustomOreGen row.
- Open the Console tab and press Restart.
On start the plugin writes plugins/CustomOreGen/config.yml. Without a supported SkyBlock plugin it prints "You are not using any supported skyblock plugin! Will use the vanilla range check hook instead." That is expected. In that mode the plugin treats the nearest player in the world as the generator's owner and the island level is always 0, so tiers must use permissions.
Define your generators
Stop the server and open plugins/CustomOreGen/config.yml in the File Manager. The file defaults to two generators:
generator1is the default. Itspermissionis empty andunlock_islandLevelis0, so everyone gets it. Itsblockslist isSTONE:50.0,SANDSTONE:40.0andIRON_ORE:10.0.generator2is labelledVIPand needs the permissionoregen.vip. It givesIRON_ORE:90.0,STONE:5.0andSANDSTONE:5.0.
Each blocks entry is a Bukkit material name, a colon and a percentage. The file says the values in one generator should add up to 100, otherwise the plugin does not work correctly. Name extra generators in order: generator3, generator4 and so on. The permission is any node you invent, and your permissions plugin hands it out (Set up LuckPerms on your Minecraft server).
The default generator1 has no permission or level requirement, so it applies to everyone: a cobblestone generator becomes 50 percent stone, 40 percent sandstone and 10 percent iron ore. Edit its blocks before players find it.
Other options near the top:
enable-stone-generator: false. Set it totrueto also change stone generators, where lava floats on water vertically.enable-particle-effect: trueandenable-sound-effect: truecontrol the smoke and hiss when a block is generated.disabled-worldslists worlds where the generator does not work. It starts withworld_nether.
If the owner is offline, the plugin uses the first generator in the file.
Reload and test
Save the file, then run customoregen reload in the Console tab or /customoregen reload in game. The command checks the permission customoregen.admin, so run it as an operator or grant that node. To see which generator a player gets, run /customoregen inspect <player>. It prints the SkyBlock plugin in use, the island level and the generator that applies.
Common problems
- Nothing changes. Check the world is not in
disabled-worldsand that you are looking at a cobblestone generator. Stone generators only change whenenable-stone-generatoristrue. - Players do not get the VIP generator. The permission in the file must match the node you gave them exactly, for example
oregen.vip./customoregen inspect <player>shows what applies to them. - Odd results after editing percentages. Make each generator's values total 100.
