Set up Custom Images on your server

Add the Custom Images plugin by hand, place picture files, and hang logos and posters on walls with /image, with the permissions to share it.

Updated 3 min read

Custom Images loads any picture you give it into the world, split into 128 by 128 pixel blocks, so you can hang logos, posters and signs on your spawn walls. Players see the images without installing anything, and the plugin needs Paper or Purpur.

Checked against Custom Images 2.5.12, the newest build on its Spigot page (October 2026), which lists Minecraft 1.8 to 26.3.

What you need

  • A Paper or Purpur server. Vanilla servers have no Plugins tab, so switch software in JAR Manager first (see Change your Minecraft version or mod loader).
  • Pictures saved as PNG or JPG. The plugin accepts any format Java can read, but its page says other types may not show up in the list command.
  • A permissions plugin such as LuckPerms, to give people the /image permissions listed below.
  • ProtocolLib is optional. The plugin lists it as an optional extra, and its page only suggests it as something that may help if images will not delete.

Install it

Custom Images is published on Spigot, which the Plugins tab does not search, so you add the jar by hand.

  1. On your own computer, download the jar from the plugin's Spigot page. The file is named like images-2.x.x.jar.
  2. In the File Manager, open the plugins folder and click Upload to add the jar.
  3. Start the server from the Console tab so the plugin creates its files, then stop it again.
  4. Open plugins/Images, the folder the plugin created. It holds config.yml, and it is also where you put your pictures.
  5. Upload your picture files into that Images folder, then start the server.

The plugin's page lets you store its data in SQLite, MySQL or a raw file. SQLite is the default, and it needs no setup, so leave config.yml as it is. This server has no database to point MySQL at.

Place an image

Run these in the game. The plugin places an image where you click a block, or where you right-click in the air while holding an item.

  • /image list shows the picture files the plugin can see.
  • /image create <image name|url> [scale percent] starts placing an image. Give a file name from the list, or a web address.
  • Click the block you want to hang it on. To place an image in the air, hold any item and right-click without aiming at a block.
  • /image delete removes an image when you click it. /image delete near <range> removes the images within a range.

Every block is 128 by 128 pixels, so a large picture takes many blocks and can lag the client. Sizes in multiples of 128 pixels look best. To enlarge a picture, add a percentage, for example /image create myImage.png 200 for twice the original size. Horizontal images need Minecraft 1.13 or newer.

Permissions

The plugin's page lists one permission per command:

  • images.command.create
  • images.command.delete
  • images.command.delete.near
  • images.command.list
  • images.command.import
  • images.command.transfer

Common problems

  • An image will not delete. Right-click it in several places, including the centre of a block. Make sure the player's Minecraft version matches the server's.
  • An error mentions unknown world with ID. A world was deleted while images were still in it. Recreate the world, remove its images with /image delete near <range>, and only then delete the world again.
  • Pictures are missing from /image list. Check the file is in the Images folder and is a PNG or JPG.
Tip

Take a backup in the Backups tab before you delete or reset a world that has images in it.
