Set up Clans on your Minecraft server
Upload the old Clans plugin by hand, set its name and base options, use the /clan commands and permissions, and know the risks on a current server.
Clans is a small clan plugin by Phloxz. Players create a clan with a name, invite friends, set a clan base to teleport to, and earn a clan colour from kills. It runs only on the server, so players install nothing.
Checked against Clans 0.4.5, the version listed on SpigotMC for Minecraft 1.7 to 1.16, October 2026.
The plugin was last updated in November 2020 and its page lists nothing newer than Minecraft 1.16, so nothing confirms it runs on current Paper. Take a backup first, and test it before your players rely on it. ClansLite is a clan plugin on Hangar that was updated in May 2026 and lists Paper up to 26.1.2.
What you need
- A Paper or Purpur server, which shows a Plugins tab under Content in the panel menu.
- Nothing else. The plugin supports Vault and PlaceholderAPI but does not need them. Clans stores its data in files only, and the plugin's page says it has no MySQL support.
Clans is published on SpigotMC, which the Plugins tab does not search, so you add the jar by hand.
Install Clans
- Create a backup in the Backups tab.
- Download the
.jarfrom the plugin's SpigotMC page on your computer. - Open File Manager, go into the
pluginsfolder and click Upload. Pick the jar. - Open Console and click Restart. Plugins load only at startup.
- Watch the Console while it starts and look for errors that name Clans.
Settings
Clans keeps its settings in plugins/Clans/Settings/config.yml and its messages in a messages.yml beside it. Open the file in File Manager, change a value, click Save, then run /clan reload in game. The options that matter most:
ClanNameLengthcaps how long a clan name can be, andClanNameMatcherlimits which characters it may use. The default allows letters and numbers only.ClanLimitEnabledandClanLimitcap a clan's size. An invite fails once the limit is reached.BaseTeleportEnabled,BaseTeleportCooldownandSetBaseEnabledcontrol the clan base.PermissionEnabledswitches the permission checks on or off.ChatFormatEnabled,CustomChatFormatEnabledandChatFormatare the chat settings.ChatFormatdefaults to%clan% &8* %player%&7: &f%message%.VaultSupport.EnabledandVaultSupport.ClanCreatePricecharge money to create a clan, which needs Vault.
Clan colours depend on kills, through the ClanColors list. The plugin's page gives this default: grey from 0 to 99 kills, green from 100 to 299, and red at 500 or more.
Commands and permissions
Every command starts with /clan and has its own permission:
/clan create [name], permissionclans.create./clan invite [player]and/clan accept [player], permissionsclans.inviteandclans.accept. The player to name when accepting is the one who invited you./clan kick [player],/clan leaveand/clan delete./clan listlists the clan's members, and/clan stats [name]shows a clan's stats./clan statson its own shows the global top 10, with permissionclans.topstats./clan baseteleports to the clan base, and/clan setbasesets it./clan reload, permissionclans.reload.
Each permission follows the pattern clans.<command>. /clan is for players, and the plugin refuses it from the console.
Common problems
- A clan name is refused. It is too long, uses characters
ClanNameMatcherdoes not allow, or is onBlacklistedClanNames. - An invite fails. The target player is offline, is already in a clan, or the clan reached its limit.
- Base teleport waits. The plugin tells the player not to move until a short delay has passed. The base settings in
config.ymlcontrol it.
