Pair the Rust+ App With Your Rust Server

Check your Rust+ App Port, confirm it with app.info, and pair the Rust+ phone app from inside Rust.

Updated 4 min read

Rust+ is Facepunch's companion app for Rust. Paired with your server, it shows live player counts, in-game time, your team and a map of the server, and it can control smart switches and send alarm alerts. Your Rust server already has the port the app needs, so setup is mostly checking that port and then pairing from inside the game.

Checked against Rust server build 2635 and Facepunch's Rust+ wiki page, October 2026.

What the app needs from your server

Facepunch's wiki says the only requirement for most servers is that the TCP port the companion server listens on is reachable from the internet. On a PlayYourWay server this is already done. When your server is created, we attach a port for it and write it into the Rust+ App Port field on the Startup tab. The port number is one of ours, well above the 10000 minimum Facepunch's Rust+ backend requires.

Open the Startup tab and find Rust+ App Port. Leave the number as it is. Rust+ finds your server through that port, so it has to stay the one we assigned.

Facepunch also says the server must be able to reach its companion service (companion-rust.facepunch.com) for registration and push notifications. If either stops working, tell support.

Check it is working

  1. Start the server and wait for Server startup complete in the Console.
  2. Type app.info in the Console tab. Facepunch documents it as the command that shows which port the companion server is using. On our test server it printed App connects to: followed by the server's address and the same port number as Rust+ App Port.
  3. Compare that port with Rust+ App Port on the Startup tab. They should match.
  4. Scan the boot output for Rust+ companion server connectivity test failed! Disabling Rust+ features. That is the line Rust prints when its automatic connectivity test fails and it switches Rust+ off.

If you see the failure line, copy it from the Console and send it to support with your server name.

Pair from the game

Pairing starts in Rust, not on the server panel.

  1. Install the Rust+ app on your phone (iOS or Android) or open the web app from Facepunch's Rust+ page.
  2. Join your server in Rust. Facepunch's companion update post says it added a "Rust+ tab to the main menu" and that servers only send you notifications if you opt in "from the Rust+ menu in-game". Look there for the pairing option.
  3. Open the app to use the paired server.

Facepunch says notifications are opt-in per server, so each player turns them on from the Rust+ menu in the game. Pairing also uses push notifications, so keep notifications allowed on the phone.

Keep the companion.id file

Rust keeps your server's identity for Rust+ in a file called companion.id, in the same folder as your save files (server/rust on our servers). Facepunch's rules for it:

  • Do not give it to anyone, or use someone else's.
  • Do not use one copy on several servers.
  • Do not delete it at random.

If it is lost, Rust makes a new identity, and Facepunch says players will probably have to pair again and will lose notification permission. Facepunch says to keep it with your server and its backups, so do not delete it from the File Manager.

When Rust+ will not work

  1. The app says the server is offline. Pairing worked but the app cannot reach the companion port. Check the Rust+ App Port against app.info, and look for the failure line above.
  2. The Rust+ menu says Rust+ is disabled. Facepunch says players can see this in the Rust+ menu when the connectivity test failed or the server turned Rust+ off.
  3. You are running hardcore mode. Facepunch's hardcore mode removes Rust+ entirely. See Change the game mode on your Rust server.
  4. Console edition. The Rust+ app is for the PC game. The app's store listing says Rust Console Edition is not supported.
