Mute Players on Your Rust Server

Mute, unmute and list muted players from the Console tab with the mute commands, using a SteamID64.

Updated 2 min read

A mute stops a player typing in chat without removing them from the game. It is the middle step between a warning and a kick, useful for a player who spams or swears but is otherwise fine. On your Rust server you do it from the Console tab with three commands.

Checked against Rust server build 2635 and Facepunch's Useful Console Commands wiki page, October 2026.

The mute commands

The game lists these in the Console, and its listing describes global.mute as acting on a connected player (type find mute to see them yourself):

CommandWhat it does
global.muteMutes a player so they cannot use chat
global.unmuteLifts the mute
global.mutelistPrints a list of currently muted players

Facepunch's wiki lists the short forms mute, unmute and mutelist, and the game's own list shows the global. forms, and on our test server mute <steamid64> and unmute <steamid64> both answered from the Console tab. Used by an admin, the wiki says a mute applies to the whole server. Used by an ordinary player in their own game console, it only hides that person from them. The wiki's mutelist is a player's own local list, so use global.mutelist for the server's mutes.

Mute a player

  1. Open the Console tab.
  2. Type users while the player is connected. It lists everyone connected with their SteamID64, the 17-digit number that starts with 7656.
  3. Type mute <SteamID64>, for example mute 76561198123456789. Facepunch's wiki accepts either a name or a SteamID64, and the number is safer when two players have similar names.
  4. Check the list of muted players with global.mutelist.

Unmute a player

Type unmute <SteamID64>.

When to ban instead

A mute is for chat problems. If someone is cheating or griefing, use a kick or a ban. Rust server.cfg and admin commands covers kick, ban, banid and unban, and how to make yourself an owner or moderator so the commands are allowed in game.

Common problems

  1. "Command not found". Spell it out in full as global.mute, and check you are in the Console tab of the right server.
  2. The wrong person was muted. Use global.mutelist, then unmute them by SteamID64 or by the list index.
  3. "Player not found". The command answers this for a SteamID64 that has never been on your server. Check the number with users while they are connected.
