Install The Twilight Forest on your server

The Twilight Forest is a dimension exploration mod. Its page lists fully fledged dungeons, varied boss battles and treasure with unique traits and functions. The Twilight Forest team, with Benimatic as one of the owners, publishes it on CurseForge. It runs on NeoForge, Forge and Fabric, depending on the Minecraft version. This guide installs it on a NeoForge 1.21.1 server.

Pick the right build

The team's own page is on CurseForge, and the Modrinth results for "twilight forest" are other projects, such as the Unofficial port and add-ons. Which file you want depends on your loader and version:

• NeoForge, Minecraft 1.21.1: version 4.8.3345, marked release, uploaded on 22 March 2026. It asks for NeoForge 21.1.209 or newer.
• Forge or NeoForge, Minecraft 1.20.1: version 4.3.2508, marked release.
• Fabric, Minecraft 1.21.1: the newest Fabric build, 4.8.754, is marked beta.
• Minecraft 26.1.2: builds exist for NeoForge and Fabric, but both are marked alpha.

The team says it develops The Twilight Forest for the latest version only and gives no estimate for ports. To change loader or version, open JAR Manager under More, choose the loader under Server software and the version under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The switch reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup in the Backups tab first. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.

Install it

1. Open Mods under Content. In the source chip row at the top of the tab, press CurseForge. The Game version filter starts on your server's version.
2. Search for The Twilight Forest and press Install. The mod's jar lists no required mod besides NeoForge itself. If a prompt about missing add-ons appears anyway, press Install all.
3. Restart from the Console tab, or press Start if the server is stopped. The install toast says "Restart the server to load it".

Open the Installed view and check that The Twilight Forest has no Failed to load badge.

Players need it too

The CurseForge page lists the environment as Client and Server. Each player installs the same version for their loader and Minecraft 1.21.1. The page warns that OptiFine is incompatible with the mod and suggests Embeddium and Oculus instead. Reach the dimension

A player builds a portal frame. The page gives the conditions: the frame is made of grass, dirt, podzol, mycelium and similar blocks, flowers, mushrooms, leaves or other plants sit on top, and the frame is completely filled with water. The dimension's name inside the game is twilightforest:twilight_forest.

Settings for server owners

The mod's common config includes options aimed at servers. disablePortalCreation turns portal creation off entirely, portalCreationPermission sets the permission level needed to make a portal, originDimension is the dimension portals work from (the overworld by default), newPlayersSpawnInTF sends first-time players into the Twilight Forest, and casketUUIDLocking stops other players opening a dead player's Keepsake Casket. NeoForge writes the common config as twilightforest-common.toml in the config folder. Stop the server before you edit it in the File Manager, then start it again.

Common problems

• A player cannot join: their version differs from yours, or they run OptiFine.
• The server stops at startup: the jar is for a different Minecraft version or an older NeoForge than 21.1.209. Check both in JAR Manager.
