Give Yourself Items on Your Rust Server
Become an owner, spawn items with spawnitem and give items with the inventory commands the game lists.
Rust has admin commands that put items straight into a player's inventory or on the ground in front of them. They are how you set up an event, replace something lost to a bug, or test a base design without grinding for hours. All of them need admin rights on your Rust server, and some of them only work from inside the game.
Checked against Rust server build 2635 and Facepunch's Useful Console Commands wiki page, October 2026.
Become an owner first
Item commands are admin commands. If you have not made yourself an owner, do that before anything else:
- Join your server, then open the Console tab and type
usersto find your SteamID64. - Type
ownerid <SteamID64> "YourName". - Leave the server and rejoin, since the new level applies from your next join.
Rust server.cfg and admin commands walks through it, including moderators.
Spawn an item in front of you
Facepunch's wiki lists spawnitem <item>. It spawns the item where you are looking, and if the name you typed is not found the game lists the closest choices.
- Join your server as an owner or moderator.
- Press F1 to open Rust's console.
- Look at an open patch of ground and type
spawnitemfollowed by the item name. - If the console answers with a list of choices, pick the exact name from it and run the command again.
Because the command depends on where you are looking, it only works from your own game console. The panel's Console tab is a remote console with no character, so it cannot aim.
Give items straight to a player
Rust also has a set of inventory commands that add items to a player's inventory. Facepunch's wiki does not cover them, so these signatures come from the game's own command listing on build 2635 (type find inventory.give in the Console to see it):
inventory.give {item} {amount} {condition} {skin} {container} {slot}has no player argument, so run it from your own game console.inventory.giveto {item} {player} {amount} {skin}takes a player, which makes it the one to try from the panel's Console tab.inventory.giveid {itemid} {amount}takes the numeric item ID instead of a name.
The listing also includes inventory.givebp and inventory.giveall, and a spawn command called entity.spawnitem. If you are unsure of an item's name, spawnitem offers matches.
Keep admin items from spoiling the wipe
- Hand out items on a test or event server, not your main wipe, unless your players know about it.
- Tell your players when admins hand out items, so nobody is surprised.
- Gather rates are not a server.cfg setting, so if faster gathering is what you want, a plugin suits better. How to install Oxide/uMod plugins on your Rust server covers that route.
Common problems
- "Command not found". You are probably typing a command in the wrong place. In-game commands go in the F1 console, and RCON-style commands go in the panel's Console tab.
- Nothing appears. You are not an owner or moderator, or you have not rejoined since being added. Reconnect and try again.
- "Item not found". Use the list the game offers. The name must match exactly.
- Items went to the wrong player. Check the player name you typed, and use
usersto see who is connected.
