Generate a GSLT for Your GMod Server
Make a Steam login token for App ID 4000, save it in the Startup tab's Steam token card, restart, and fix the usual token problems.
A GSLT, short for Game Server Login Token, is a free code from Steam that ties your Garry's Mod server to a Steam account. Without one, the server ranks lower in the server browser and gets a new identity every restart. The Startup tab has a card that walks you through making one.
Why you need one
The Garry's Mod wiki says that since the May 2020 update, "all Garry's Mod servers should have a GSLT" and that servers without one "will suffer a severe penalty in server list ranking". The account also helps your players find the server if its IP address ever changes, and it verifies game ownership.
Without a token, the Console shows the line No account token specified; logging into anonymous game server account as the server starts. Next to that line is an Add a Steam token link that jumps straight to the card.
What you need first
- A Steam account that owns Garry's Mod. The wiki says a verified purchase is required to make a token.
- A phone number on that Steam account. The panel's card lists this as a requirement.
Make the token
- Open your server and go to the Startup tab.
- Find the Rank in the server browser card.
- Under step 1, press Open Steam. It opens
steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameserversin a new tab. Sign in with your Steam account. - Under step 2, press Copy 4000. The App ID for Garry's Mod is
4000. - On Steam's page, paste
4000into the first box, App ID of the base game. Put your server's name in the Memo box, so you can tell your tokens apart later. Press Create. - The page reloads with a new row showing the memo, the App ID and the Login Token. Copy the token. It is 32 letters and numbers.
- Back in the card, paste it into the box that says Paste your Login Token and press Save token.
- Press Restart now in the message that appears. The server signs in to Steam with the token as it starts.
Once the token is saved, the card changes to "Your server signs in to Steam with your token". It shows only the last four characters of the token, and has Change and Remove buttons.
One token for each server
Every server needs its own token. The wiki puts it plainly: "EACH SERVER MUST HAVE UNIQUE LOGIN TOKEN!" If you see Connection to Steam servers lost. (Steam error code 6) in the console and players are being disconnected, the wiki says the likely cause is one token used on two or more servers.
Make a new token for each server on the same Steam page. The memo is only a label for you.
Change or remove the token
- Change lets you paste a new token over the old one. Restart the server afterwards.
- Remove asks you to confirm. From the next restart the server signs in anonymously again, and it ranks lower. The token itself stays on your Steam account.
On Steam's page you can also delete a token, set a different memo, or generate a new token for a server. If you generate a new one, paste it into the card too.
Common problems
- "That isn't a login token." The panel only accepts the 32 letters and numbers in the Login Token column. Copy that value, not the memo or the App ID.
- The server won't start after adding a token. The wiki says "Specifying an invalid / expired key will prevent the server from starting." Check the token against Steam's page. Press Remove in the card if you need the server up before you fix it.
- Tokens stopped working after a password change. The wiki says changing your Steam password "will invalidate all active GSLTs". Open Steam's page, use Regenerate token on each row, and paste the new tokens into each server.
- The console still shows the anonymous line. The server hasn't restarted since you saved. Press Restart on the Console tab.
