Find a player's Valheim ID
Where a Valheim player's Steam or Xbox ID comes from, what the format looks like, and how the Players tab fills it in.
Valheim does not identify a player by their character name. The admin, ban and allowed lists all use a player ID, which is separate from the name above their head. You need it when you add someone to a list by hand, and the good news is that the Players tab can often read it for you.
Checked against Valheim 1.0.20 (patch of 15 October 2026) and Iron Gate's own dedicated server guide, October 2026.
What an ID looks like
A Steam player is identified by their 17-digit steamID64. The Valheim wiki says the lists use the steamID64, and the Server Devcommands README tells admins to add their steamID64 to the adminlist.txt. Your Players tab accepts a bare 17-digit ID and saves it exactly as you paste it.
Iron Gate's guide gives the general format as the platform name, an underscore, then the user ID, and says it is case sensitive. An Xbox or PC Game Pass player looks like Xbox_2535451158060505.
A crossplay join also prints a longer address that starts with playfab/. That is a connection address, not the player's ID, and the panel refuses it.
Easiest: let the Players tab fill it in
For admins and bans you rarely need to see the ID at all.
- Ask the player to join the server.
- Open the Players tab. They show on Online.
- Click Make admin or Ban beside their name. The panel adds their ID to the right list.
Those buttons only show once the panel has seen the ID in the server's output, which it reads for crossplay players and for Steam players alike. After that, open Admins or Banned: a row shows the player's name beside the ID. The name is only matched for players who joined within the last hour, so an older entry shows the bare ID.
There is no equivalent button for Allowed only. For that list, add the ID by hand using one of the methods below.
Find it inside Valheim
Iron Gate's guide says the ID can be read from within the game using the F2 panel, and from the server log. Press F2 in game to bring up the player panel, which shows who is connected.
Do not look for it in the Console tab. The panel trims the connection lines that carry the ID out of that view to keep it readable, so nothing useful shows there.
Find a Steam ID
The panel's own How to find an ID note says a Steam player can see their 17-digit ID in Steam under Account details. Paste that number into the list as it is.
Add the ID to a list
- Open the Players tab and choose Admins, Banned or Allowed only.
- Click the Paste an ID box, paste, and click Add. The button stays greyed out until the ID has a valid shape.
- Restart the server. The panel applies list changes the next time the server starts.
Each list is a plain text file in .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim, called adminlist.txt, bannedlist.txt or permittedlist.txt. Add admins, kick and ban players and whitelist players cover what each list does.
The buttons need the player's character to have spawned. If the Online list shows a line such as "1 player whose name shows after their next respawn", ask that player to respawn or rejoin, then look again.
