GMod Server Console Commands
The Garry's Mod console commands worth knowing on a hosted server for players, bans, maps and settings, and how to keep a change after a restart.
The Console tab runs any command a Garry's Mod server understands. This is a short list of the ones that are useful on a hosted server, what each does, and which settings you should change in the panel and not with a command. Descriptions come from the Facepunch Garry's Mod wiki's console variable list.
Send a command
- Open the Console tab. The server needs to be Running.
- Click the Send a command box at the bottom of the log.
- Type the command without a leading slash and press Enter or Send. Your command shows in the log after a
>, followed by the server's reply.
You can also look commands up from there. help <command> will "Find help about a convar/concommand", and find <text> will "Find concommands with the specified string in their name/help text." The wiki points out that cvarlist prints every command and variable, but the console's line limit often cuts the top off. find searches for one word instead.
Players and bans
Ban players on your GMod server explains these in order, and ULX admin commands covers the in-game admin menu.
Maps and chat
The map and gamemode the server starts with are set in the Startup tab, so a map you change with changelevel goes back to the Map value when the server restarts.
Server settings
The server.cfg we install already sets many of the sbox_ settings, such as sbox_maxprops 100.
Keep a change after a restart
A setting you send from the Console lasts until the server restarts. To keep it, save it in garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg:
- Stop the server.
- Open
garrysmod/cfg/server.cfgin the File Manager and add the command on its own line below// Add custom lines under here. Use the same form as the console, for examplesbox_maxprops 150. If the file already has a line for that setting, edit that line instead. - Save and Start the server.
Leave the map, gamemode, player slots, tickrate and Workshop collection to the Startup and Workshop tabs. The server is launched with those values. The Loading screen tab manages sv_loadingurl for you.
What about RCON?
Garry's Mod servers here have no RCON setting on the Startup tab, and the server.cfg we install asks you not to set RCON in it. The Console tab does the same job for the server's own commands, so there is nothing to set up.
Commands you send from the Console run with the full power of the server. Avoid kickall unless you mean it, because it removes everyone connected.
Checked against the Facepunch Garry's Mod wiki and our panel, October 2026.
